Oxford Brookes shines at Shanghai 'Great Motorsport, Great Technologies' Seminar
Professor of Motorsports Engineering Design Geoff Goddard visited China last month to participate in the 'Great Motorsports, Great Engineering' seminar.
The seminar was part of 'Britain's GREAT', a week-long campaign of events organised by UK Trade and Investment to promote education, tourism, trade and investment overseas.
The invitation to participate is yet another reminder of Oxford Brookes' position as leaders in the field of education and training for the motorsports industry.
Professor Goddard sent back the following report:
The event took place on 12th April with lectures held in the Auto Museum in Shanghai Auto City, a vast development to the north of Shanghai where the major manufacturers including VW, BMW, Bosch, and SAIC, amongst others have established their headquarters and plants in China. The morning was split into sessions where major Chinese investment companies shared the timetable with the small UK group where directors of McLaren Cars, MIRA, Ricardo and Oxford Brookes represented by myself each gave short lectures.
The Oxford Brookes lecture was very well received as I covered not only the opportunities for major investors to look at us and consider a range of options from funding scholarships to emulate the Fernando Alonso scheme but also to take advantage of the world class test, research, and consultancy services we can offer to any clients with further examples like the Bamboo Bike and the case for vehicle re-cycling also included. Obviously my history as both a Chief Designer and Technical Director winning numerous World Championships and designing, developing and in many cases producing world class automobiles ranging from the Cosworth Sierra to Mercedes 2.3-16 and the Aston Martin DB7 led to many detailed questions from the audience which included several chairmen and technical directors of major Chinese automobile companies throughout the rest of the day.
The lunch and further discussions were held in a major hospitality suite at the Grand Prix circuit where we also watched the F1 practice before we were then all ferried back to the British Consulate in Shanghai.
