Department secures partnership with motorcycle racer Joe Burns.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences has entered into a new partnership with Superstock 1000 motorcycle racer Joe Burns for the 2014 season.

As part of the innovative partnership students at the university will work with the team on a number of projects, forming part of their studies towards an MSc in Motorsport Engineering. A large portion of the project will involve the development of a Kawasaki British Superbike machine. Joe will work with the students to test and develop the bike in readiness for entry into 2015 British Superbike Championship.

Joe Burns is a highly successful motorcycle racer and who has won podium places in several of the top Superstock Championships. When asked what he thought of the new partnership Joe commented:

The opportunity to work with Oxford Brookes University is just fantastic, it will help me hugely in 2014 and with the planned development of a BSB machine it will help me realise the step up in 2015”.

The partnership offers an excellent opportunity for Oxford Brookes students to get real industry experience in developing superbikes as well as working on real-world projects. Dr Matt Clarke, a Research Fellow in the Department said,

We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with Joe and his team. Oxford Brookes University is acknowledged as one of the foremost academic institutions in the training of engineers for the motorsport industry. While much of our work is directed at 4 wheel activity the BSB development will help to strengthen our knowledge in the two wheel racing world.
